Curtin Springs Beef.
Murray Grey cattle, raised on native grasses across a million acres.

Grass-fed.
Grey and calm.
Curtin Springs Station is over 1 million acres in size, running a herd of approximately 4,000 head.
We run British breed cattle (not Brahmans) with a herd serviced by Murray Grey bulls and some bulls that are a Murray Grey/Belgian Blue cross. The core breeding herd of Murray Grey cows provides ongoing replacement heifers. We do have some composite cows (composite just means mixed heritage) and it is important to keep some of the ‘bush’ cows, as they give us hybrid vigour and they know how to survive when it get’s tough!
We run a longitudinal herd, meaning we don’t cull our cows based on age. The older cows hold all the corporate knowledge and business wisdom of how to survive in our desert landscape. However, we always cull on temperament.

The only ones
We are the only station in Central Australia currently breeding Murray Greys.
02 / The Murray Greys

Why
Murray Greys?
They have a number of traits that we believe work well for us:
- Very placid and calm. They are increasingly being sought by feedlots and abattoirs.
- Small head and lower birth weight: we don’t assist calving.
- Happy to walk to get something to eat and drink.
- Happy to mother up someone else’s calf.
- A similar size and aged Murray Grey steer will generally weigh heavier and yield better than other breeds.
- The bulls would rather F#*K than fight. We need bellies full of arms and legs (pregnant cows), not bulls trying to prove how good they are by fighting with each other.
03 / From paddock to plate
A long way
to dinner.
Curtin Springs would love to have our home-grown beef for our customer meals at Curtin Springs Wayside Inn.
However, to meet legal requirements, meat must be slaughtered in a licensed abattoir. We have to send animals 1,500km+ south to be slaughtered and then get the meat back home again. Lots of food miles in that!
We hold EU and Pasture Fed accreditation.
